Project Info

CultuRISE is an opportunity for hundreds of young people from different cultures and backgrounds to make museums more exciting for young people living in the North East of England.

Young people are working with museum professionals, source communities and other specialists to explore the stories behind the world collections held in the museums of the North East and ‘make them come to life’ by reinterpreting them in a modern context.

 The project has three stages:

  • 2010
Multi-art performance event at Dance City reflecting cultural diversity in the North East. The Youth Forum worked with a professional director and young people form across Tyne and Wear to create and perform an original piece of physical theatre involving dance, gymnastics and performance.

  • 2011
The Youth Forum will develop a mobile community arts road show for young people living in rural areas across the region called CulturBITE. The Youth Forum will travel to remote areas and share their knowledge of diverse cultures through bite-sized creative workshops in different art forms.

  •  2012
The Youth Forum will organise a World YouthFest carnival to celebrate diversity in the North East. The themes will range from youth integration and identity to issues related to youth culture globally.

What have CultuRISE been up to?

In July 2010 CultuRISE performed The World Collection at Dance City, a piece of devised theatre inspired by artefacts from the North East archives.

In August 2010 CultuRISE took some time out together to reflect on their performance and consider what worked well and what they would change next time.

What Next For CultuRISE?

The Youth Forum are beginning to make plans for the CulturBITE roadshow next year and are busy recruiting new young people to join the CulutuRISE team.
